Electronics Market

A combination of excellent dielectric properties with outstanding temperature, weldability and durable sliding properties makes NORTON® Films the perfect choice for many Electrical-Electronics application.  From PC board production to flexible heaters, wide screen flat panel displays to wire and cable wrap to slider phones, Saint-Gobain provides a multi-product line approach to meet the most challenging requirements.

Wireless Communications

Electronics: WirelessNORTON low-density extruded PTFE films are used as the primary insulation in low-loss coaxial cable used in a variety of communications systems, including cell phone base-stations.  Our NORTON skived films also play a key roll in providing the customizable dielectric constant at low loss for cell tower antenna.

Semiconductors

Electronics: SemiconductorOur NORTON Cast Film housed within a structural container is used as primary clean packaging for sensitive, ultrapure chemicals used in chip manufacture.  Our ZITEX® PTFE porous membranes provide ultra-pure filtration as part of fluid delivery systems within semiconductor and other micro-electronics fabs.

Wire and Cable

Electronics: Wire and CableSince the beginning of PTFE use as wire insulation, the companies that now comprise Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics were in the forefront of innovation.  PTFE insulation wire insulation is used for high temperature instrumentation wire (UL Class H, 180 C and above), corrosive environments such as trans-oceanic communications cables, and high voltage wires requiring excellent dielectric breakthrough strength.  Polyimide films, both coated and uncoated, are used to insulate magnet wires in high temperature electric motors.  Saint-Gobain has a very wide range of PTFE and Polyimide Films and is clearly a world-leader in high performance films for electrical insulation applications.

In addition, Saint-Gobain provides wire insulation for down-hole Electrical Submersible Pumps (Energy Market) and for Aircraft control and entertainment applications (Aerospace Market).

Batteries

Electronics: BatteriesA major thrust in electronics are low power consumption combined with high energy density.  Saint-Gobain Films are there with NORTON Paste Extruded PTFE used in a variety of Metal-Air batteries and fuel cells.  These materials are coated with carbon slurries and become part of the battery anode.  For example, Zinc-Air batteries are commonly used for hearing aids with energy density over 10 times that available with Lithium ion batteries!

Capacitors

Electronics: CapacitorsHigh performance capacitors are needed to survive high temperature environments, particularly in military aircraft.  Our CHEMFILM® Type C film is the thinnest pure PTFE film.  This ultra-thin film (as low as 5 microns!) is often metalized and rolled creating a spiral of alternating dielectric and conductive layers.  The thin material together with high temperature capabilities make ideal, compact high performance capacitors for the most extreme environments.

Displays

Electronics: DisplaysThe world of electronic displays is a dynamic, exciting marketplace.  Saint-Gobain Films are used in both process consumables in the assembly of LCD and LED TV’s during the sealing of flexible circuits to the glass displays.  Our Coated Films are used for release films, scratch resistant films, and casting media in a range of “flexible” displays such as the Amazon Kindle®.  A new range of Optically Clear Adhesives (OCAs) are finding their way into functional film arrays as well as touch screens.
