NORTON® Films and Tapes are used in high performance applications in the Energy Oil and Gas market including electrical insulation for electrical submersible pumps, splicing tapes for down hole power cables, expansion joints for power plants, as well as electrical insulation tapes for motors, generators and transformers.
Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics offers the highest quality electrical insulation products used in the most rigorous application such as motor insulation on “down hole pumps”. Our FLUOROWRAP® FH products are polyimide films with FEP laminated to one side to act as dry film adhesive. These films offer excellent dielectric strength with high temperature resistance in a small package…which is very important at the bottom of a small diameter well bore.
Our NORTON polyimide film and CHEMFAB® PTFE/glass products are used a materials to fabricate slot liners in these closed stator motor applications. We also offer skived PTFE films which are used as electrical insulation and chemical/gas barriers on motor lead extensions and power cables.

In the electrical submersible pump application, power cables and motor lead extensions are used to bring electricity from the surface to the high powered motor at the bottom of an oil well. With well depths reaching up to two miles, these power cables need to be field-spliced at regular intervals. These splices can be the weakest point in the electrical insulation system and susceptible to failure.
By using our high performance CHR® pressure sensitive tapes, many oil production companies around the world have been able to reduce the downtime and the extreme costs associated with these failures. We offer low modulus PTFE, high modulus PTFE, fiberglass and PTFE/glass pressure sensitive tapes which provide excellent electrical insulation at high temperatures as well as very good mechanical and chemical resistance in these harsh environments found in oil wells.
